The Beauty and Tradition of Wedding Garlands

Wedding garlands are more than just flowers; they have traditions behind them and symbolize love, commitment, and togetherness for the couple.  Garlands play a crucial part in weddings, especially in South Asia, as exchanging the garlands marks a sacred moment for both bride and groom.

But what makes these garlands special?
A Symbol of Love and Respect

Mainly consisting of fresh flowers, jasmine, roses, or marigolds, this wedding garland ritual is meant to herald mutual acceptance of one another for life by both individuals. It is an emotionally richer gesture where both express mutual respect, trust, and a bond that would grow with time. For example, in the case of Hindu weddings, it is thought of as the Jaimala or Varmala ritual where a garland is worn by both the bride and the groom in front of their necks indicating to receive each other.
Beauty in Simplicity

Even the garlands themselves are painstakingly handcrafted. They can be of fragrant flowers like jasmine or even leaves of tulsi which connote purity and blessings. Garlands may carry gold thread or pearls draped along them for a dash of sophistication when the couples don their respective attires. The scent, hue, and detailed designs all take part in sending out an atmosphere of celebration.
Beyond Tradition

While tradition insists on very strict garland meanings at weddings, modern couples only accept creativity in choosing such garlands. For instance, it can be simple, minimalist designs or even garlands made of non-traditional materials such as silk flowers or leaves, to personalized garlands-a a one-of-a-kind beauty that tells its love story.

In short, a wedding garland is not merely something pretty at the wedding and beautifully arranged floral decoration; it is rather a meaningful reflection of unity and love, the promise to be with one another,  cherished through generations and cultures.
